Commvault has made a selection of the most important and innovative technologies in this field: Snapshots, Incremental Change Capture and Live Copy.

- Snapshots: Hardware-based snapshots are becoming the standard method for protecting business-critical applications. Commvault offers unified management of multiple storage arrays, regardless of the manufacturer (including IBM, EMC, NetApp, Hitachi, HP, and newer technologies like Pure, Datacare, and Nimble). It also integrates a vast database of applications and systems (SAP, Oracle, Exchange, SQL, PostgreSQL, DB2, NAS, etc.), as well as hardware snapshot support for virtual environments, allowing you to back up, for example, 500 virtual machines in less than 15 minutes (VMWare and Hyper-V support).

Commvault Intellisnap provides the necessary layer of intelligence between applications and storage, enabling significantly more recovery points for business-critical applications (RPOs) and eliminating 100% of the scripts required to coordinate hardware snapshots. In addition to this enormous advantage, it allows for instant data recovery, not only at the application level but also at a granular level, such as file, database table, email, or virtual machine. This technology is essential in today's critical environments, as it enables compliance with demanding business SLAs.

- Incremental Change Capture: This technology captures and stores only block-level changes in the data, dramatically reducing data transmission across network and storage resources. This exponentially improves Recovery Point Objectives (RPOs) and Recovery Time Objectives (RTOs), as the data resides at the destination in its native format. The benefits are clear: in addition to eliminating the need for further full backups beyond the initial one, it saves 90% compared to a traditional streaming backup. Similarly, the computing workload on production systems is massively reduced, allowing for the creation of many more recovery points (RPOs). Furthermore, the copy is unique and usable not only as a backup but also for other processes, since recovery (or access) to the protected system is virtually instantaneous, as it doesn't require physical restoration because it can be presented as a native copy.

Unlike legacy backup manufacturers, who store data in a proprietary way, Commvault's platform stores it in an open format, which allows for infinitely faster data retrieval/access.

- Commvault's Live Copy. Both technologies are absolutely essential for meeting SLAs and addressing the multiple use cases a business may require, especially considering that traditional backup products don't offer a solution for these problems. But we can go even further, as the key differentiator lies in Commvault's "Live Copy" technology, which allows the secondary copy (the backup) to be presented natively, readably, and from optimized secondary storage. Once again, Commvault's cutting-edge innovation makes recoveries much faster, eliminating the need to rehydrate, deduplicate, decrypt, or rebuild the backup. By providing direct access to the data, we eliminate downtime and reduce infrastructure costs by also reducing the number of secondary copies.

Another example use case is creating backups with "Live Copy" technology for testing or development environments. This way, when making a change, such as applying a patch, a backup of the production environment can be created. Once the backup is on the Commvault platform, it can be mounted and the patch applied to the backup environment, reducing costs, time, and business impact.
