“We believe security comes first, and we advise, prepare, and implement the right amount of security in the right places for the secure deployment of IoT-related initiatives,” said Jason Shepherd, Director of IoT Strategy and Partnerships at Dell. “Certifying a security solution like LynxSecure for our new IoT Edge Gateway gives our customers the ability to fully isolate their IT and OT applications without impacting performance.”.
LynxSecure helps address one of the key aspects of IoT security today: the vulnerability of devices like gateways that connect the OT network to the IT network, enabling the transmission of sensor data to the cloud. These gateways can become targets for malicious threats originating from the IT side and attempting to access or control data from the OT side. LynxSecure is a secure virtualization solution based on a least-privilege separation core, originally designed to separate and protect military networks of different categories; it now offers the same level of separation for IT and OT networks. Virtualization technology allows different operating systems and applications to run in separate, secure domains while maintaining real-time determinism and high-performance network data processing, along with careful control and protection of data moving from OT to IT.
“The addition of LynxSecure to the Dell Edge gateway provides IoT customers with security from day one and helps them protect their vital assets and data from IT-based threats,” said Ian Browde, Vice President of Corporate Development at Lynx. “LynxSecure can not only help stop attacks through the gateway, but its combined isolation and virtualization capabilities can also be leveraged to maintain separation of interests between the application stacks of different participants extracting data from the same sensor network.”
The Dell Edge 5000 Series gateways are the latest addition to Dell's IoT solutions portfolio, offering customers the option and flexibility to design IoT ecosystems with analytics on the network, in the cloud, or in the data center. The gateway is available for OEMs to integrate into their solutions or for customers in building and industrial automation environments to use as part of their IoT strategy.
Lynx is a member of the Dell IoT Solutions Partner Program and will work closely with Dell to deliver innovative security solutions for IoT applications. The first example of these security solutions was showcased at the aforementioned conferences, which focus on IoT and security.
Lynx has provided demonstrations of LynxSecure's functionality on the Dell Edge gateway at both Embedded World and RSA. The demonstrations featured two isolated domains on a single gateway, representing IT and OT networks, and proved that an attack on the IT domain did not affect the OT system operating on the other domain.
Internet of Things Security:
In a world where everything is connected to the internet, offering access to billions of connected devices across the globe, these same devices are also exposed to a new world of cyber threats. Trying to protect billions of connected devices, many of which don't even run an operating system, is a near-impossible task. Running LynxSecure at network gateways can provide a critical point of protection for connected endpoints, either by isolating different IoT communication flows from each other or by separating the IoT sensor network from the internet, which is the primary entry point for attacks.
