Utilizing a 9-disk helium-sealed design, the new MG07ACA series provides the power-saving capacity and storage density that cloud and enterprise storage solution providers need to meet their TCO goals.
"We've raised the bar with the new MG07ACA series 9-disk helium-sealed design," said Akitoshi Iwata, vice president of the storage products division at Toshiba Electronic Devices and Storage Corporation. "By utilizing an innovative design, we continue to enhance the benefits that high-capacity disk storage can offer our broad global customer base.".
The MG07ACA series features 14TB 9-disk and 12TB 8-disk models. The 3.5-inch helium-sealed mechanical design [3] provides higher storage density and a lower HDD operating power profile than the previous MG06ACA series for optimal TCO in cloud-scale infrastructures. The MG07 series also utilizes Toshiba Group's laser welding technology to ensure the helium remains securely sealed within the drive enclosure. The drives support a SATA 6 Gbit/s interface and 7,200 rpm access speed. The 14TB 9-disk models achieve a 40% increase in maximum capacity compared to the previous 10TB MG06ACA models. Furthermore, the 14TB models improve energy efficiency by more than 50% (W/GB) [4].
"Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage's first helium-sealed drive has arrived on the market with a class-leading 14TB capacity and CMR-leading performance," commented John Chen, industry analyst at Trend Focus. "The initial timelines for this capacity position the company to meet the storage needs of large enterprises in hyperscale and cloud environments. Furthermore, the company's choice of a 9-disk platform paves the way for even greater capacities in future product generations.".
“While server and storage customers are realizing that solid magnetic recording (SMR) technology can improve HDD capacity, the adoption of SMR HDD products in servers and storage systems is a transition that will take several years,” according to John Rydning, research vice president for hard drives at IDC. “Toshiba Electronic Devices & Storage’s new helium-sealed enterprise HDD is the world’s first 14TB capacity drive to use conventional magnetic recording technology instead of shingled, giving enterprise customers the highest capacity hard drive currently available on the market for existing server and storage system architectures.”.
