In developing the PDJack connector, Molex partnered with Microsemi™ to utilize their PD70200 controller. The Microsemi PD70200 meets all PD device standards, including detection, classification, an integrated isolation switch with inrush current limiting and overcurrent protection, and two event classifications for PoE+. “Using the PDJack connector to implement PoE PD functionality is the easiest and fastest way possible,” concludes Diarmuid Cullinan.Compared to discrete solutions, the PDJack connector saves costs by simplifying engineering and testing requirements, requiring fewer components, facilitating production, and significantly shortening lead times. Mounted directly onto the customer's printed circuit board, the Molex PDJack connector can manage all aspects of Power over Ethernet (PoE): detection, power limit classification, and safe power-on and power-off of PD devices such as IP phones, IP cameras, wireless access points, control panels, vision systems, and point-of-sale (POS) terminals.
The PDJack connector delivers up to 25.5 W of power at voltages from 37 V to 57 V and consists of two pins for output current and several standard signal pins for Ethernet connectivity. Additional pins allow for the connection of an external DC-DC converter. PoE+ requires Cat5 or higher cabling, in accordance with the IEEE standard.
