The first module is a standard version (SST-ERS2-CPX-S), and the second is a Plus version (SST-ESR2-CPX-P), which supports expanded addressing to 30,000 input/output words and up to 256 Modbus commands per port. The modules consist of two independent RS232/RS422/RS485 serial ports with support for ASCII and RTU formats. The ports can be configured to act as Modbus masters and/or Modbus slaves. The software automatically determines whether the Modbus message is transmitted via RS232, RS422, or RS485, thus eliminating the problem of incorrect DIP switch settings. In addition, each module has an Ethernet port (independent of the CompactLogix Ethernet port) that runs the Modbus TCP protocol.

These modules also allow the Ethernet port to be used as a configuration and diagnostic tool, providing greater flexibility by enabling connections on either the backplane or front of the module. With 2,500 V electrical isolation between the three Modbus ports, as well as between the ports and the backplane, the new Universal Modbus modules offer excellent network reliability and intelligent features.

Molex SST modules for CompactLogix can be used in numerous industrial applications in the water supply and wastewater treatment, oil and gas, chemical and petrochemical sectors.
