The complete project, which will cover an area of 35 km, represents a significant investment in telecommunications infrastructure and will result in enormous qualitative and economic advantages for the island.
Emalsa (Las Palmas Water Company) and Citynet signed an agreement in 2009 to deploy a fiber optic network using the city's existing sewer system. The company installed the ring within the sewer network using environmentally friendly and minimally intrusive methods, without noise, threats to historical heritage or archaeological remains, or traffic disruptions.
“The growing telecommunications needs of the Canary Islands,” explains Fernando Clemares, CEO of Citynet, “are what has driven us to invest in fiber optic infrastructure in Las Palmas. The new network brings significant technical improvements (quality, speed, and coverage) and economic benefits to the provision of conventional services, while also enabling the provision of new services and products.”.
In this sense, the new generation access network installed by Citynet represents a qualitative leap for the sector, public administrations and users, and offers telephone and telecommunications operators the provision of new services such as high-speed fixed and mobile Internet, digital television or voice over IP channels.
