ConverterThis new product from Allied Telesis is an update to the popular AT-MC102XL media converter, but unlike its predecessor, the new model is integrated into the remote terminal. Installed in a standard PCI expansion slot, the AT-MC102XLPCI provides 100Mbps connectivity between a copper port and a multimode fiber-based port with an SC fiber connector. Drawing power from the computer's PCI bus, it eliminates the need for a separate power supply, which many alternative fiber solutions require.

This new version is designed for retail environments where staff and customers need to check stock and product information on widely distributed remote terminals. It also features Wake-on-LAN functionality, which allows the card to remain active even when the computer is in sleep mode, enabling the terminal to be remotely powered on for diagnostics, updates, and other tasks outside of business hours.

Melvyn Wray, senior vice president of product marketing for EMEA at Allied Telesis, commented: “For companies with widely distributed remote terminals that require fiber connectivity, current solutions either require external media converters with their own power supply or fiber optic network interface cards on which drivers are configured. In this respect, the AT-MC102XLPCI makes installation much easier.” He added: “This product is ideal for use in distributed thin client computers, such as those found in large retail spaces, because it gives them the ability to easily upgrade to fiber and place point-of-sale terminals at much greater distances from the main server.”
