This deployment of next-generation G.fast technology, which now delivers CenturyLink Prism® TV and data services to more than 40 MDUs spread throughout the community, is the only implementation of this size in North America today, according to Erik M. Keith, principal analyst for broadband networks and multiplay services at Current Analysis. This significant use case not only expands the potential deployment scenarios for G.fast globally but is also demonstrating superior performance characteristics compared to deployments over traditional copper twisted pairs.
“We saw a college town rich in MDUs like Platteville as an ideal testing ground for G.fast technology. It’s full of young, tech-savvy subscribers eager for an exceptional broadband experience, yet residing in apartments and other densely populated environments that can be difficult to reach with high-bandwidth technologies,” says Aamir Hussain, executive vice president and chief technology officer at CenturyLink. "By leveraging Calix's AXOS G.fast solutions, we have been able to quickly move from testing this technology to full-scale deployment. We are excited to evaluate other areas of our network where we can implement this technology to accommodate our customers' growing broadband needs."
The Calix solution in Platteville consists of a comprehensive range of Calix software, systems, and services. The Calix 801F GigaPoint acts as the demarcation access point at the subscriber's premises, terminating with G.fast cable over copper twisted pair or coaxial cable, and managed via the cloud through Calix Consumer Connect Plus software. Each GigaPoint is fed through a variety of Calix access nodes optimized for their location and function in the network, including sealed access nodes (E3-16F DPUs) located outside each building and E5-16F access nodes inside each building. The E7-2 modular access systems at the central office leverage GPON technology to deliver fiber-to-fiber services to each access node. End-to-end deployment and provisioning are managed via the cloud by Calix Activate's SDN-optimized software, which integrates with CenturyLink's orchestration software. This end-to-end gigabit solution, which scaled from conception to commercial scale in a matter of months, also delivers CenturyLink Prisma TV to subscribers on MDUs throughout the community.
"The CenturyLink G.fast deployment in Platteville demonstrates to the world how the promise of G.fast can be turned into reality," says Michel Langlois, senior vice president of systems products at Calix. "We are proud not only to help CenturyLink with this powerful technology over existing copper pairs and coaxial infrastructure, but also to have provided the platform that allows them to scale North America's largest G.fast deployment in record time. MDUs are an underserved market globally, and CenturyLink is demonstrating that service providers can leverage Calix to deliver a gigabit experience and capitalize on this opportunity."
