This has been approved by the board of directors of the Center for Telecommunications and Information Technologies (CTTI) regarding a project that consists of the deployment of a high-bandwidth fiber optic network that connects the headquarters and facilities of the Catalan public administrations, and which in the initial plans reached an investment of 660 million.
For now, the Xarxa Oberta will be deployed in the corporate headquarters of the Generalitat with available infrastructure and in the municipalities of Terres de l'Ebre (Tarragona), which will involve the connection of 696 buildings in 95 municipalities.
The aim is to improve data exchange between administrations and lay the groundwork for expanding projects that require high broadband capacity, such as remote medical diagnosis, electronic prescriptions, or court depositions by videoconference.
Furthermore, Xarxa Oberta will allow Imagina-Axia to place the network's surplus capacity on the wholesale market for the 20-year duration of the contract, under the conditions set by the European Commission. After the agreed period, the network will revert to the Generalitat's control.
