GlobeNet, the operator of the Oi group, and Alcatel-Lucent complete the modernization of the 22,000-kilometer submarine network that connects North and South America

Alcatel-Lucent and GlobeNet, a subsidiary operator owned by the Oi group, have completed the modernization of the 22,000 km long submarine cable system that connects the US and Latin America.
This project is the second upgrade completed in approximately 18 months and will allow GlobeNet to deliver a capacity exceeding 110 Gbit/s, meaning it can carry up to 13,750,000 voice calls simultaneously.

From this point forward, GlobeNet customers will enjoy enhanced connectivity and reliability, as well as faster access to applications and services. Leveraging Alcatel-Lucent's state-of-the-art submarine cable technology, GlobeNet will be able to expand its wholesale service offerings to include broadband, carrier Ethernet connections, IP-based fixed and mobile network services, and traditional voice services, as well as application hosting, videoconferencing, and international private line services.

In addition to the submarine sections, Alcatel-Lucent has upgraded the terrestrial network connection points in Rio de Janeiro and Fortaleza (Brazil), Maiquetía (Venezuela), St. David (Bermuda), and Boca Raton and Tuckerton (Florida, USA). In Rio de Janeiro, the submarine network is integrated with the optical infrastructure of GlobeNet's parent company, Oi, on the ground. Alcatel-Lucent also managed the installation, deployment, and commissioning of this system.
