The handover ceremony, captured in the image, was also attended by Josué Sallent, Director General of the Information Society of the Department of Governance and Public Administrations, and Carlos Balot, Director General of UPCnet.
AENOR delegate Eva Subirà highlighted the UPC's clear and strategic leadership during the award ceremony, noting that it is the first Spanish university to obtain this quality certification. She also emphasized UPCnet's ability to "voluntarily embrace and implement the challenge of bridging technology and business in its daily operations, as it is the first company based in Catalonia to be certified under such a demanding and prestigious international standard.".
The UPC is also one of the first European universities to achieve quality certification, which was awarded to it in July 2009. In this sense, obtaining this guarantee corroborates the importance that the UPC gives to quality and excellence in the provision of its services, offered under quality standards recognized internationally by the certification body AENOR.
At the same time, UPCnet has been one of the first 15 organizations in Spain to receive this quality distinction, out of the 36 currently certified by AENOR. As the company's CEO, Carlos Balot, noted, obtaining the certification is part of UPCnet's strategy to position itself as a provider of high-quality services, with the aim of achieving brand recognition that will enhance the prestige of the UPC and facilitate the development of new business opportunities.
In this regard, the Director General of the Information Society, Josué Sallent, encouraged UPCnet to become “a benchmark company and strategic leader in promoting the ICT sector in Catalonia.” For his part, the Rector of the UPC, Antoni Giró, emphasized UPCnet's potential in ICT management for large companies and complex organizations, such as the UPC itself.
The services offered by UPCnet that have received certification are e-learning and the UPC email system. Both are used daily by the university's teaching and research staff, administrative and service personnel, and students. Specifically, the UPC's teaching support platform, Atenea, connects more than 35,000 users, with approximately 12,000 different users accessing it each day. Regarding the volume of the university's email service, figures indicate that nearly 4 million institutional emails are managed monthly, an average of 133,000 emails per day.
The UNE-ISO/IEC 20000 standard is the first international standard for organizations that offer or manage Information and Communication Technology (ICT) services. It helps organizations structure the main activities required to manage these services, grouped into a set of processes that are essential for the creation, delivery, and evolution of ICT services.
