The telecommunications sector leads the way in digital maturity and has the most data-driven organizational model within Spanish industry, thanks to the enormous volumes of data it handles and must leverage. This is according to the Minsait Report on Digital Maturity in Spain 2019, which focuses on Data and Analytics.

The Internet of Things Community (IoT Community) and the IEEE IoT Initiative (IEEE IoT Initiative) today announced a series of collaborative activities to help accelerate the digital transformation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and speed up the development of IoT for wider adoption in businesses, industries, and sectors.

According to research by Viavi Solutions Inc. (VIAVI), gigabit internet is now available to approximately 354 million people in 51 countries, representing 5% or one in every 20 people of the world's population. The United States leads the world in gigabit internet access, with 68.5 million people having access, an increase of 4 million since August 2018. Since last year, China has surpassed South Korea as the country with the second-highest gigabit internet availability.

Fiber to the home (FTTH) continues its upward trend, surpassing 9.6 million lines in August, with a monthly increase of nearly 112,000 lines. Movistar accounts for 44% of all FTTH lines, with a total of 4.2 million. Year-on-year, compared to August 2018, the increase of 1.8 million FTTH lines stands out, contrasting with the loss of 1.2 million DSL lines.

Keysight Technologies, Inc. has announced a collaboration with Black Shark Technology to accelerate the launch of its flagship 5G gaming smartphones for consumers in China. Black Shark Technology, part of Xiaomi's MiOT ecosystem, selected Keysight's 5G network emulation solutions to expedite the development and radio frequency (RF) performance validation of the company's 5G gaming mobile devices.

New data from Synergy Research Group shows that the total number of large data centers operated by hyperscale providers increased to 504 at the end of Q3 2019, having tripled since the beginning of 2013. The EMEA and Asia-Pac regions continue to have the highest growth rates, although the US still accounts for almost 40% of the top cloud and internet data centers. The next most popular locations are China, Japan, the UK, Germany, and Australia, which together account for another 32% of the total.

Interxion has launched its third data center in Madrid, MAD3. MAD3 is another piece of the technological infrastructure that has transformed Madrid into a leading hub for digital business in Europe. As the Madrid Digital Hub study indicates, with the increasing demand for cloud services, audiovisual content distribution, and interconnection services, a second wave of investment in European data centers will be necessary to create alternative connectivity nodes.

Nokia and Etisalat have set a capacity record during the world's first field test of a single-operator terabit-per-second data transmission over a deployed fiber network. Nokia, NTT DOCOMO, Inc., and OMRON Corporation have agreed to conduct joint field trials using 5G at their plants and other production sites. As part of the trial, Nokia will provide the 5G enabling technology and OMRON the factory automation equipment, while NTT DOCOMO will run the 5G trial.
