Microchip's PHY Ethernet optical transceivers provide a secure, deterministic, and reliable alternative to traditional copper-based Ethernet solutions. They can be deployed in single-mode fiber networks up to 10 kilometers long, facilitating easy deployment in dispersed infrastructures such as enterprise networks, university campuses, or warehouses. Integrated PTP time logging delivers sub-1 ns synchronization accuracy across distributed nodes. This level of precision is essential for applications requiring highly accurate timekeeping, such as industrial automation, telecommunications, and robotics.

“Design engineers are looking for solutions that simplify network systems, and the addition of PTP or MACsec can completely revamp an existing design. In this sense, our solution helps protect our customers’ processing investments,” said Charlie Forni, corporate vice president of Microchip’s Networking and Connectivity Solutions business unit. “We’ve integrated these capabilities into our transceivers, adding functionality that helps engineers build smarter, more secure, and scalable networks.”.

The new versions support Ethernet speeds between 1 Gbps and 25 Gbps, providing higher bandwidth for data-intensive applications such as data centers, campus networks, and robotic and industrial automation. Designers can easily size their networks by selecting the appropriate data and media (optical or DAC - Direct Attach Copper) to meet their application requirements.

Security is built into the silicon and supports MACsec (IEEE 802.1AE) encryption to protect sensitive data in connected environments. This hardware implementation provides protection against network data breaches by encrypting traffic between Ethernet devices. MACsec is designed to thwart common cyberattacks, such as man-in-the-middle attacks, denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, interception, and spoofing, ensuring data integrity across the entire network.
