Greater productivityThis high-performance 13.56 MHz RFID reader IC is a member of a series of advanced RFID and Near Field Communication (NFC) products that are the result of an ambitious and successful cooperation program with STMicroelectronics.

The MLX90130 consists of an integrated analog front-end (AFE) and a built-in data framing engine for operation compliant with ISO15693, ISO14443A/B, and ISO18000-3 mode 1. It offers OEMs and system integrators the ability to provide high-quality, highly reliable RFID-enabled devices.

This IC is designed to handle subcarrier frequencies from 106 kHz to 848 kHz, with transmission speeds up to 848 kbit/s. Its digital element manages the lower protocol layers, from the application programming interface (API) to the physical layer (PHY), using advanced frame and bit decoding functions. A subcarrier-sensing digital demodulator and a programmable bit/symbol encoder/decoder are also included. Furthermore, the MLX90130 encodes and decodes start/stop bits, parity bits, extra safety time (EGT), start/end of frame (SOF/EOF), and cyclic redundancy check (CRC). A built-in 256-byte buffer allows for buffering an entire RFID frame. SPI/UART communication ports ensure easy interconnection with most MCUs, especially those in the low-cost range.

The MLX90130 has both tag and field detection capabilities. Its tag detection relies on detecting variations in the HF field near the device. If an object moves toward or away from the antenna, it can affect the HF field amplitude. The device can detect any HF field variation during a very brief period of presence in the field. This triggers the MCU and initiates communication with the tag when the correct field level is reached. Applications for the MLX90130 include access control, post-surgical monitoring, glucose measurement, drug identification, and industrial automation.

The MLX90130 is supplied in a 5 mm x 5 mm QFN package and has an operating temperature range of -40 °C to +105 °C. Sample quantities are available immediately.
