Operators are developing their access networks to better meet consumer demand for higher speeds and deliver on the promise of ubiquitous coverage. However, with very different challenges in their networks, a one-size-fits-all approach doesn't always make sense. Having the flexibility to choose the right technology and deployment practice allows operators to overcome these challenges, fill network coverage gaps, and deliver on the promise of ultra-broadband for all.
FTTx solutions introduce several fiber and DSL access nodes, covering a wide range of applications and use cases, including:
• A weatherproof fiber access micronode that can be deployed in any outdoor location, eliminating the need to invest in a central facility, cabinets, or remote, weather-protected locations. Supporting GPON, XGS-PON, and TWDM-PON, the new solution also simplifies and accelerates the evolution of the operator's fiber network.
• Reverse-powered G.fast micronodes that can be used in areas where access to the electrical grid is unreliable. The solution is compatible with Nokia's cloud-native software platform, Altiplano, which allows provisioning of the access node even when it is powered off.
• 212MHz G.fast micronodes capable of supporting speeds of up to 1 Gigabit symmetric aggregate over a single copper pair or coaxial cable. With 212 MHz G.fast, operators can extend gigabit speeds to multi-dwelling units (MDUs) without installing fiber cable.
DSL nodes provide operators with extensive copper networks and a CTTx (Cooper to the X) option capable of delivering 200 Mbps up to 1,000 meters using bonded DSL pairs on the uplink, extending ultra-broadband access to areas where fiber may not be practical.
Operators can also leverage remote fiber and DSL nodes, including the Lightspan SX-16F, DX-16F, and CF-24, announced in Nokia's Lightspan portfolio, which utilize network virtualization and software-defined networking (SDN/NFV) to automate network configuration management, maintainability, and time-to-wake.
The new micro-nodes include:
• The Nokia 7362 ISAM SF-8GW is a rugged fiber access micro-node that can be deployed anywhere and offers symmetric 10/10 Gbps and asymmetric 10/2.5 Gbps speeds depending on network requirements.
• The Nokia Lightspan Access Node SX-16F is a sealed, standalone micro-node that supports 16 106 MHz G.fast ports with reverse feed-through capability.
• The Nokia Lightspan Access DX-16F is a dense, self-contained micro-node that supports 212 MHz G.fast over coaxial cable.
• The Nokia 7367 ISAM SX-48U supports 48 vector VDSL 17a/35b or ADSL ports with additional ports for bonded uplinks. By using these three DSL technologies in specific combinations, operators can deliver heavy 10 Mbps transmissions over 6 km or transmit at speeds of 200 Mbps over 1 km.
