Maintaining effectiveness even at very low concentrations, FR8719PP helps prevent the spread of fire and also meets stringent fire protection criteria in applications such as construction, automotive, and transport packaging, without affecting the material's properties. PP pipes, for example, retain their high impact strength, dimensional stability, and chemical resistance without restriction after switching to halogen-free flame retardants. Unlike many halogen-based flame retardants, FR8719 does not exhibit long-term migration of the active substances, and at the same time, PP products treated with it offer superior UV resistance.
The dispersion of FR8719PP in injection-molded and extruded PP products is one of the reasons for the high effectiveness of this HFFR flame retardant. This not only allows for relatively low dosages and, therefore, the preservation of mechanical properties to a great extent, but also ensures uniform flame resistance throughout the product. Furthermore, the low potential for dye build-up (DBU) in nozzles offers a considerable processing advantage over other common halogen-free solutions on the market.
The choice of flame retardant depends largely on the desired UL94 rating. For example, to meet the requirements of class V-2, low concentrations of flame retardant are sufficient to eliminate the free radicals formed by the heat of combustion and thus prevent fire. Only at higher concentrations do they also prevent the production of glowing droplets, as required by the UL94 V-0 rating.
Tosaf has developed a broad portfolio of halogen-free flame retardants, which differ in their flame-retardant systems and meet specific priorities to achieve the optimal balance between effectiveness and concentration. Their dosage ranges from 3% to 10%, depending on the desired rating, the type and melt flow index (MFI) of the polypropylene (PP), the thickness of the part, and the presence of other additives. In contrast, halogen-free intumescent flame retardants require a dosage exceeding 20% to achieve similar performance.
In addition to developing new HFFR flame retardants that are safe for health and the environment, Tosaf also meets the ongoing demand for halogen-based products. These combine high thermal stability with high performance to meet stringent fire safety standards without compromising product properties. For example, the brominated flame retardant FR6413PE is suitable for all types of PP pipes, while cost-effective chlorinated flame retardants such as FR0049 can be used for both PE and PP.
