“In data center operations, it is often necessary to reconfigure the fiber optic data cabling. This is usually done by manually patching the patch cables in the distribution boxes. However, it is not uncommon for active data transmissions to be interrupted by pulling on the wrong patch cable, even if this has been checked beforehand according to the cabling documentation,” explains Harald Jungbäck, Product Manager for Data Center Cabling Systems at Rosenberger OSI.

Rosenberger OSI has developed the Identification Patch Cable (IDP) to address this problem. By using an external light source that is simply plugged into the socket at one end of the patch cable, the other end can be uniquely and reliably identified. The solution can be easily implemented by a single person during operation.

Active electrical or optical components are not used in this solution, allowing for simple and cost-effective modernization of existing fiber optic cables in data centers.
