5.1 Selection of Tools

   - TOOLS NECESSARY FOR HANDLING FIBER OPTIC CABLES

  • Steel strapping deck peeler (Fig. 1).
  • PVC, PE, etc. cover peeling machine (Fig. 2).
  • Knife or blade (cutter).
  • Aramid scissors (Fig. 3).
  • Heavy-duty gloves.
  • Protective goggles (Fig. 4).
  • Steel cutting pliers (Fig. 5).
  • Loose fiber optic tube cutter (Fig. 6).
  • 900 μm fiber optic stripper.
  • 250 μm fiber optic stripper.
  • Precision cutter.
  • Cable gel cleaning solution (limonello).

5.2 Stripping the Fiber Optic Cable

  -REMOVE THE OUTER COVER (Dimensions according to specifications).

  • Use the right tool.
  • Use protective equipment (goggles, gloves...).
  • Avoid sudden pulls and bending of the cable.

  -REMOVE PROTECTIVE ELEMENTS (Remove or cut according to specifications).

  • Use the right tool.
  • Use protective equipment (goggles, gloves...).
  • Avoid sudden pulls and bending of the cable.
  • Clean with cleaning solution if gel or petrolatum is present.

  -REMOVE OUTER COVER (Dimensions according to specifications).

  • Use the right tool.
  • Use protective equipment (goggles, gloves...).
  • Avoid sudden pulls, marks on the optical fiber protection, and bends in the cable.
  • Clean with cleaning solution if gel or petrolatum is present.

  -REMOVE INTERNAL PROTECTIVE MATERIALS (Polyester tapes, fiberglass, ...)

  • Use the right tool.
  • Use protective equipment (goggles, gloves...).
  • Avoid sudden pulls and bending of the cable.
  • Clean with cleaning solution if gel or petrolatum is present.

  -IDENTIFY FIBER CARRIER ELEMENTS (Colored tubes, bundled, ...)

  • Use indelible marker and/or numerical indicators.

  -REMOVE FIBER HOLDER ELEMENTS (Dimensions according to specifications).

  • Use the right tool.
  • Use protective equipment (goggles, gloves...).
  • Avoid sudden pulls and bending of the cable.
  • Clean with cleaning solution if gel or petrolatum is present.

  -HOUSE IN ENCLOSURE ELEMENTS (Boxes, torpedoes, panels...).

  • Take care not to damage the optical fibers.
  • Route the optical fibers to their proper location (see specific specifications).
  • Clean with cleaning solution if gel or petrolatum is present.
  -PROCEED TO ITS MECHANIZATION: CONNECTION OR SPLICING AS APPROPRIATE.
