According to market analysis, tens of billions of devices of all kinds will be connected to the Internet in the coming years. Several factors are driving the Internet of Things: the increasing availability of open-source software, the growing ease of use of Integrated Development Environments (IDEs), and constant hardware improvements, as seen in the case of Arduino.
Based on these premises, Siemens and RS Components have worked together to offer IOT2020, a simple solution for engineers to start working with the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and face the challenges of an increasingly connected world.

The IOT2020 is a flexible IoT gateway designed for continuous industrial operation and is fully certified. It can be used to retrieve, process, analyze, and send data to virtually any type of device thanks to its various interfaces, including Ethernet, USB, and micro SD.

This gateway is also Siemens' first product compatible with open source software such as the Arduino IDE and Linux; it can also be used with third-party hardware via Modbus or PROFINET.

The IOT2020 also supports various programming languages such as Java, C++, and JSON, thanks to a range of IDEs including Eclipse and compilers for Yocto Linux. It is also expandable via its PCIe port.

The device is attractively priced (just €89.00 plus VAT) and is an industrial product with UL and CE certifications, making it highly practical for a wide range of industrial clients. It allows for the open development of ideas, which can then be transformed into professional projects and applications. It is also ideal for educational purposes, providing a hands-on experience that facilitates rapid learning.

“With years of experience serving customers in the industrial and electronics sectors, at RS we are proud to have been part of the technological evolution in both fields. The open-source technology adopted by Arduino has simplified and accelerated the creation of electronic prototypes, while Siemens has played a key role in developing industrial automation to levels of reliability and interconnectivity that were simply unthinkable 10 years ago,” says Paolo Carnovale, Head of Industrial Product Marketing at RS, adding that “the Simatic IOT2020 has bridged the gap between these two worlds and will provide future engineers with the flexibility needed to develop amazing new IIoT applications.”.
