The IEEE has published a new standard to improve the communication and distribution-automation capabilities of smart grids. It is also developing three other standards on smart grids.

The new IEEE 1591.1-2012 standard covers hardware performance criteria, testing requirements, procedures, and acceptance for the ground overload cable for transmission lines (commonly known as ground wire) with optical fibers, commonly known as optical ground wire (OPGW). Electrical, mechanical, optical, environmental, and testing requirements related to design, installation, service, and maintenance, including routine testing, are included.

Narda Safety Test Solutions now offers low-frequency electromagnetic field measurement equipment compliant with ICNIRP 2010 standards. The software for the EFA-300 electric and magnetic field analyzer, which allows the new limits to be loaded onto the instrument, is completely free. In addition, Narda offers an ICNIRP 2010 version of the ELT-400 exposure level meter. Existing probes are compatible with the new instrument.

For the second year in a row, Verizon and NEC Corporation of America have successfully completed a high-bit-rate transmission over field fiber. The latest successful test achieved 21.7 terabits per second (one terabit equals 1,000 gigabytes), the highest capacity to date, under field conditions.

The test was conducted earlier this year over 1,503 kilometers (934 miles) of standard single-mode field fiber on Verizon's network in the Dallas area.

IMS Research forecasts strong growth in the global market for external enterprise storage platforms used for video surveillance, with an average annual growth rate of 52% in storage capacity from 2010 to 2016. A 354-kilometer submarine cable link in Indonesia, critical to the country's international connectivity, has been upgraded by Nokia Siemens Networks. During a technical seminar in Zurich, R&M presented for the first time an error-free 40 Gigabit Ethernet (40GbE) data transmission using a 550-meter-long multimode cable with nine MPO/MTP® connectors. The results are approximately 60% higher than the previous benchmark standard and significantly exceed the parameter defined by the IEEE 802.3ba standard.
