Gloria Touchard, Nokia's Corporate Technical Director, outlines below the predictions for the main trends in the telecommunications sector for 2023:

Edge orchestration will take center stage.
Edge computing hosts and enables the execution of applications at the network perimeter. It does this by collecting, processing, storing, and analyzing data near the points where content is consumed and produced by end-user devices such as sensors, actuators, and controllers.

With a budget exceeding €5 million and a duration of three years, the IDUNN project, led by the Basque technology center IKERLAN, aims to create a cognitive detection system (an artificial intelligence application that 'learns' on its own to interpret new external attacks) to analyze and address emerging cyber threats. Its objective is, therefore, to ensure that the operational technologies currently used in the industrial sector are resilient to both current and future cyberattacks.

Microsoft has announced the acquisition of Lumenisity® Limited. Lumenisity's innovative HCF product enables the creation of fast, reliable, and secure networks for large-scale, enterprise-level, global organizations. The acquisition will expand Microsoft's ability to further optimize its global cloud infrastructure and serve Microsoft Cloud Platform and Services customers with stringent latency and security requirements.

The European Commission has approved, under EU state aid rules, a €500 million scheme for Spain made available through the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) to support the deployment of broadband backbone infrastructure in rural areas. This measure forms part of Spain's strategy to address the needs of citizens and businesses in the context of the country's digitalization. The plan also contributes to the EU's strategic objectives related to the digital transition.

The second nanosatellite in Sateliot's 5G NB-IoT NTN constellation has successfully passed vibration and vacuum tests and is now ready for flight. SpaceX will launch it in the first quarter of 2023 from its orbital launch site at Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA.

NEC Iberica and NEC Laboratories Europe are building a smart communications network for the University of Murcia campus that will provide an experimental 5G platform for student learning and research innovation. This smart campus will include FIWARE-based data spaces and an enhanced Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem designed to optimize the university's energy efficiency.

According to a recently published report by Dell'Oro Group, revenue from optical transport equipment declined 6% year-over-year in the third quarter of 2022. Component supply continued to weigh on the growth potential of the optical equipment market.

Nokia has announced that it has expanded its collaboration with Orange France to upgrade its microwave backhaul network with the latest generation of products. Combining the capabilities of Nokia's latest high-power E-band microwave products with traditional microwave frequencies, the trial enabled a high-capacity link over a distance of nearly 4 kilometers.

But our mobile operator knows us by another number, a kind of network identifier or license plate that is unique in the world; no two are alike. Today we're talking about these other numbers because part of that license plate could be in danger of disappearing.

Airnex has launched the country's first network designed for the Internet of Things (IoT). Andorra now has a 0G network.

SpaceX will launch the second nanosatellite of the Sateliot constellation in the first quarter of 2023 from its orbital launch site at Cape Canaveral, Florida, USA. A Falcon 9 rocket will transport the first of the five nanosatellites that Sateliot plans to put into orbit next year, marking the beginning of the commercial phase of its constellation to provide global 5G coverage for NB-IoT. 

The total number of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) lines reached 13.4 million in August, with 79,514 new subscriptions, according to the latest telecommunications market data published on the CNMCData portal. FTTH added 79,514 new lines in August. 500,862 mobile numbers and 118,707 fixed-line numbers were ported.

The joint venture PreZero-Urbaser, which was awarded Lot 3 of the public waste collection and transport service contract by the Madrid City Council, has already begun providing these services. The districts it will cover are Arganzuela, Carabanchel, Usera, Puente de Vallecas, Villaverde, and Villa de Vallecas.

The new regulation of fiber optic markets was undoubtedly the highlight of 2021 in the telecommunications sector for the CNMC. However, looking back, the Directorate of Telecommunications and Audiovisual has been busy on many other fronts.

Nokia today announced it is providing optical upgrades to Gulf Bridge International (GBI), a global cloud, connectivity, and content enabler in the Middle East. This solution will increase GBI's international network capacity ahead of the World Cup, enabling high-speed connectivity between Doha, Qatar, and Milan, Italy. Nokia's coherent PSE-V technology will allow GBI to deliver significant capacity improvements to its existing submarine cables and terrestrial links spanning two seas and three countries, meeting customer demand for additional bandwidth between the Middle East and Europe.
