Thousands of homes and businesses near HS2 could benefit from faster broadband thanks to a project that will sell surplus data capacity to broadband providers. Last Tuesday, the European Commission gave the German government its approval to amend the state aid scheme for the nationwide rollout of fiber optic networks. These amendments will extend the scheme until the end of 2028 and increase the budget from €12 billion to €38 billion.

Celestia TTI and Indra, as the national industrial coordinator of the NGWS/FCAS program in Spain, have reached a collaboration agreement to jointly develop next-generation antennas that will allow the design of advanced communication systems for the FCAS.

Nokia has announced that GFiber Labs has successfully tested broadband speeds of 50Gbps over its existing fiber network. Phlux Technology, a manufacturer of avalanche photodiode (APD) infrared sensors, Airbus Defence and Space, and the University of Sheffield have embarked on a €500,000 project to build more efficient free-space optical communications (FSOC) satellite terminals. Funded by the European Space Agency (ESA), the medium-term goal of the project is to achieve reliable 2.5 Gbps communications with low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites at a wavelength of 1550 nm.

200,000 homes in the Balearic Islands will soon have access to ultra-fast fiber optic connectivity thanks to a new €5 million project between Slovenian company Kontron and Fibwi. 100,000 homes in Mallorca will be among the first to connect. Fibwi will become the first network operator in the Balearic Islands to offer XGS-PON technology and services to its customers, with symmetrical speeds of up to 10 Gbps.
