Visible Light Communication (VLC) technology, also known as Li-Fi (described by The Economist in January 2012 as a cheaper and faster optical version of Wi-Fi), uses the visible light portion of the electromagnetic spectrum to transmit data both unidirectionally and bidirectionally between all types of mobile computing devices (smartphones, tablets, laptops, etc.) or between fixed devices (desktop servers), and between a mobile device and a fixed one, such as an office light fixture and a computer. According to the Expert Advisory Group and Steering Board Members of the NetWorks Technology Platform, VLC is one of eight emerging technologies that will be the focus of research in the coming years. Furthermore, TIME Magazine named VLC one of the fifty best inventions of 2011.
